The aim of this study was to provide the community with a high quality assembly of Dictyostelium firmibasis. Long read sequencing of the Dictyostelium firmibasis genome was performed, followed by short read sequencing for polishing and mRNA-seq to allow for annotation of the genome. The resulting high quality genome allows for a detailed comparison to the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum. From an evolutionary perspective, this can be used to study conservation of genes, as well as investigate the evolutionary timeline of the social amoebae. Investigating conservation and expression of genes involved in multicellular development in Dictyostelium firmibasis can shed a light on which genes are required to evolve this multicellular lifestyle.
